Experienced experts from the disaster trenches will describe how disaster legal services fits into the emergency management and response framework, how disaster legal services programs are quickly put into place, and how lawyers can connect to disaster survivors. And for lawyers wanting to help but feel ill prepared, the webinar will also provide background on the most recurring legal issues disaster survivors face - from insurance disputes, FEMA benefits, landlord tenant disputes, consumer fraud, and more. Participants will receive information on additional online resources that will provide invaluable resources for when they represent a disaster survivor.

Presenters will discuss the myriad ethical considerations presented in disaster representation, including Model Rules 1.1 (competent representation), 1.2 (scope of representation), 1.3 (diligence and promptness), 1.4 (communication), 1.6 (protecting client information), 1.15 (safekeeping client property), 5.5 Comment [14] (exception to the unauthorized practice of law for pro bono legal services in jurisdictions following determination of major disaster), and 6.5 (Nonprofit And Court-Annexed Limited Legal Services Programs).
